Plumstead Market Space is a local board for buying, selling and giving away items, with a separate board of classified ads. It is this website and the Plumstead Market Space iPhone app. This policy says what we hold about you, why, who else sees it, and how to have it deleted.

What we hold

  • Your account: your email address, the user name you choose, and your password, which is stored only as a salted hash and cannot be read back. If you give one, the first line of your address and your postcode, used to fill in the Sell form for you.
  • Items you put up for sale: the photos, the wording, the price, the first line of the address and the postcode where the item is, and a WhatsApp number if you add one.
  • Offers you make: the amount, any note you add, your user name and your email address.
  • Classified ads you place: the wording, the photo, and the phone number or email address you choose to show on the ad.
  • Purchases: payments are made to Apple in the iPhone app. We never see your card or Apple account details. We keep Apple's transaction number, what was bought, the price and currency, and when a subscription runs out.
  • Notifications: if you allow them in the app, a token that lets Apple deliver notifications to your phone.
  • Signing in: a session token in the app, and a cookie on this website, so that you stay signed in. We use no advertising or tracking cookies.
  • Reports and blocks: if you report an item or an ad we keep the report and your reason. If you block someone we keep that, so their items and ads stay hidden from you.

What other people can see

  • Classified ads are public. Anyone can read an approved ad, including the phone number or email address on it, without signing in.
  • Items for sale are shown to signed-in members: your user name, the photos and wording, the first line of the address and the postcode you gave for the item, and a WhatsApp button if you added a number.
  • Offers: the seller sees your user name, the amount and your note. When a seller accepts your offer, they are sent your email address so the two of you can arrange payment and collection.
  • The site administrator can see everything above, in order to approve ads, deal with reports and help with accounts.

Why we hold it

To run the board: to show your items and ads, pass offers between buyers and sellers, send the emails and notifications that go with them, apply the free listing allowance and any subscription, keep the board safe, and reset a forgotten password. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising or share it with advertisers.

Companies that process data for us

  • Google Cloud (Vertex AI, Gemini): each photo you upload is sent to be checked for unsuitable content, and the main photo of an item is used to draft its title, description and price. When a seller asks for a recommendation, the offers on that item are sent too.
  • Brevo: sends our emails (password resets, new offers, accepted offers), so it handles your email address and the content of those emails.
  • Apple: takes payment for in-app purchases and delivers notifications.
  • Amazon Web Services: hosts the server and database, in the United Kingdom.

How long we keep it

Until you delete your account. An item drops off the board after a set number of days but stays in your account until you remove it. Records of purchases may be kept for as long as tax and accounting rules require.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time: in the iPhone app, open the Account tab and tap Delete account; on this website, open Account and choose Delete account. You can also email us and we will do it for you. Deleting is immediate and cannot be undone. It removes your account, your items and their photos, the offers made on them, your classified ads and your notification tokens. Offers you made on other people's items stay with those items but lose your name, email address and note. A subscription is billed by Apple and must be cancelled in your Apple account settings.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to how we use it. Email us at the address below. If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

Plumstead Market Space is for adults. It is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly hold data about them.
